Are beekeepers conservation-friendly? A study on attitudes and values toward animals among small-scale farmers

Resumo

Valores afetivos e estéticos atribuídos à natureza são motivações primárias que podem influenciar as atitudes humanas e a valorização econômica em direção à biodiversidade. A expressão desses valores, porém, depende do contato direto e de experiências positivas com a natureza. Nesse sentido, pesquisas sobre atividades que favoreçam interações benéficas homem-natureza, como a criação de abelhas, podem contribuir para entender os fatores que influenciam as atitudes e a valorização econômica da biodiversidade. Nossa pesquisa foi realizada numa localidade rural originalmente coberta pela Mata Atlântica, no estado de Pernambuco, Brasil. Nós investigamos as atitudes em relação a uma variedade de animais conhecidos localmente e sua valorização econômica entre dois grupos de pequenos agricultores: criadores e não criadores de abelhas sem ferrão. Os dados foram coletados por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas. Os criadores de abelhas citaram mais atitudes afetivo-estéticas do que os não criadores. Por outro lado, os criadores estavam menos dispostos a pagar pela conservação animal em comparação com os não criadores. Ao que tudo indica, a expressão de valores afetivo-estéticos direcionados aos animais tende a ser mais frequente em grupos de pessoas que mantêm atividades que favorecem interações benéficas com o meio ambiente, como os criadores de abelhas. No entanto, esses valores refletem aspectos não materiais que as pessoas atribuem à natureza, que podem não ser valorizados economicamente pelos grupos humanos. Portanto, valores não-materiais que as populações humanas atribuem à natureza, como os relacionados ao afeto e à estética, devem ser considerados em propostas de conservação que envolvam o público.
